Places I've Lived

	Blacksburg, Virginia 1968-1971 (ages 0-3) My dad was in grad school at Virginia Tech at the time I was born. Virginia is my ancestral homeplace: most of the branches of my family have been in the Shenandoah Valley for many generations. My ancestors were the German Anabaptists who fled persecution and settled in the Shenandoah Valley in the 1700s.
	Duluth, Minnesota 1971-1976 (ages 3-7) I went to Lester Park Elementary School up to the second grade.
	Rhinelander, Wisconsin 1976-1980 (ages 7-12) I went to Crescent Elementary School (grade 3) and Newbold Elementary School (grades 4-6).
	West Virginia 1980-1991 (ages 12-23) I was here for junior high, high school, my undergrad degree, and my first master's.
	Kumamoto, Japan 1991-1992 (ages 23-24) I taught English and German at a private language school.
	Newark, Delaware 1992-1994 (ages 24-26) Did another master's, this time at the University of Delaware.
	Philadelphia area, Pennsylvania 1994-2006 (ages 26-37) Did my Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. Then I taught for several years as a professor in the Linguistics Department at Swarthmore College.
	Bozen (Bolzano), Italy 2006-2007 (ages 37-38) I worked at a research institution developing an electronic corpus of German as it is used in the South Tyrol (Alto Adige) region of Italy.
	Boston area, Massachusetts 2007-2016 (ages 38-48) I took a job in the voice recognition industry.
	Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 2016- (ages 48-) I took a job doing machine translation.
