Blacksburg, Virginia 1968-1971 (ages 0-3) My dad was in grad school at Virginia Tech at the time I was born. Virginia is my ancestral homeplace: most of the branches of my family have been in the Shenandoah Valley for many generations. My ancestors were the German Anabaptists who fled persecution and settled in the Shenandoah Valley in the 1700s. |

Duluth, Minnesota 1971-1976 (ages 3-7) I went to Lester Park Elementary School up to the second grade. |

Rhinelander, Wisconsin 1976-1980 (ages 7-12) I went to Crescent Elementary School (grade 3) and Newbold Elementary School (grades 4-6). |

West Virginia 1980-1991 (ages 12-23) I was here for junior high, high school, my undergrad degree, and my first master's. |

Bozen (Bolzano), Italy 2006-2007 (ages 37-38) I worked at a research institution developing an electronic corpus of German as it is used in the South Tyrol (Alto Adige) region of Italy. |
